But,
You need to tell Vista it's a HP Desktop 500C to do it. Still, it works and for what I do, it works fine. I don't notice any difference.

I tried the 940c drivers as shipped with vista and they worked. Also adds cleaning and alignment.
Hope that helps

on my p1000 the Deskjet 500c printed in a strange color (burgundy) BUT the 940c driver prints in black and is excellent! Thanks for the tip! HP not supporting VISTA because the printer is 9 years old is ridiculous. That's like GM not making parts for your truck that's still on the road!

You guys are right on! The 940c drivers seems to be working fine for me too. Thank Bill

I got the printer to work reasonably with black and white on the deskjet 940c driver, haven't experimented with colour yet, but the black and white makes me optimistic.

could you tell me how to tell vista that my P1000 is a 940c. On printer properties vista will not allow me to input a new driver.
thanks,

Plug in the printer. Go to control panel then device manager. Click 'other devices' and there will be hp photosmartp1000 listed. Select it, right click, and select update driver, then browse my computer for driver software. You might have to download and extract the 940c driver and then put that location in the box.

Messed up that last part. You dont have to download the drivers or put anything in the box. Just select "Let me pick from a list of devices drivers on my computer". I think you can handle it from there.

Hi,
I want to thank you for the info on the P1000 printers.
I was shocked that my favorite Hp P1000 printer would not work on my new laptop with Vista.
By doing what you advise, telling Vista that it is a Deskjet 500c, or 940c, as suggested by another user, I can get it to print, but not in Black. I just printed a word document, and it prints in a gray tone. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Randy
