My Drobo 2nd gen is filling up. I have a 750Gb and 2 WD Green 1TB drives in it. It's at about 80%. I had an external WD USB drive with 1Tb. I removed the drive from the external WD and found it was a WD Green 1Tb SATA drive.
I plugged it in to my Drobo and was expecting the 18 hour rebuild but that didn't happen. An window popped up saying a new drive was added, my free space went up and thats it. No relayout or rebuild. I'm not complaining at all obviously, this was pretty cool. My drive 'capacity' went from 1.5Tb to 2.5Tb. Thats 2.5Tb usable out of 3.4Tb plugged in.
Happy, it was painless and happier there was no relayout stuff.
Update: The Drobo is doing some kind of rebalance because the drives are clunking away and the iMac is doing nothing. I tried using it for stuff but right now it's really slow. I'll report back in the morning, hopefully, it'll be done by then.
